Yucatán Peninsula
Few Mexican destinations can overwhelm like the Yucatán. The renowned peninsula, situated between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, includes parts of Belize and Guatemala, as well as three Mexican states: Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Campeche. Quintana Roo is probably the most well-known due to its popular tourist destinations of Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Millions of tourists come here to enjoy the plentiful sunshine, picture-perfect beaches and endless parties. But escaping the beach can be fun too. Just a couple of hours west, you’ll find Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán State, with its colonial remains, modern restaurants and many cenotes (freshwater springs). No trip to the Yucatán is complete, however, without a visit to the area’s fascinating Mayan ruins, including the colossal pyramids and powerful temples of Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
Acapulco
Acapulco is Mexico's party capital. The city has a remarkable topography of breathtaking bays, secluded coves and towering cliffs dropping into the sea. The landscape is dotted with powdery beaches and wrapped in lavish green hills. Acapulco was named the “Pearl of the Pacific” during its heyday as a playground for the rich and famous, including Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, and the lovely seaside mecca remains an inviting tropical retreat today. There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of Acapulco’s bays and coastline than on a yacht, cruising the Pacific Ocean with cocktail in hand and nary a care in the world.
Baja California
Baja, the earth's second longest peninsula, runs along the west coast of Mexico for an incredible 760 miles of untamed natural beauty from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas. Baja is famous for its excellent wines, pristine nature preserves, and some of the best diving in the world. Jacques Cousteau once described Baja California Sur (the southern of the two Mexican states on the peninsula) as the “Aquarium of the World”. Dolphins, jumping manta rays, and seals splash about, and during migration season, you can observe gray, humpback, and even blue whales at close range. Find a sleepy town along the 1063-mile long Carretera Transpeninsular (Hwy 1) and watch the sun descend into the Pacific over fish tacos and a cold margarita. Hike caramel-colored canyons and discover prehistoric cave paintings. Gaze in awe at the dazzling stars through clear night skies. Party like rock stars in La Paz and Cabo. Whatever suits your fancy, you can find it in Baja. And since summer never leaves the immaculate beaches of Baja California, it’s an ideal escape from winter climes. Baja California has over 2,000 miles of coastline, with many islands and sheltered deep-water harbors on both the Pacific and Gulf of California sides, so the sailing possibilities are endless!
