See top spots for boating in the area

The Black River

At 33 miles long, this is the second longest river in Jamaica. This wetland area is a vital preserve for more than 100 species of birds and a few types of crocodiles, so swimming may not be a good idea. If you’re brave enough to sail the waters of Black River, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic day of nature immersion. For those who love to fish, Black River is a great spot as the brackish waters harbor an underwater bounty of snook and tarpon that can reach 200 pounds. Other fish frequently caught in the area are snapper, jack, king fish, tuna and grouper. As an added bonus, sailing down the coast from Jakes to the Black River will give you plenty of opportunity to see dolphins!

The Luminous Lagoon

Stetching from Trelawny to Falmouth, The Luminous Lagoon is a magical place and a must-see phenomenon. Many organized tours come here, but they generally run short, maybe 30-40 minutes, and you’re not allowed to take photos with your personal devices so a better option for the experienced boatman is to rent a boat or kayak and do it on your own. The lagoon is home to millions of dinoflagellates, and at night, when the waters are disturbed, these microscopic organisms produce an eerie glow and reflect the outline of fish and other objects in the water. The Luminous Lagoon is the largest and most brilliant of four such locations in the world. Every night it attracts and awes visitors and scientists from around the globe.

Montego Bay

Located in Southwest Jamaica, Montego Bay has lots of activities and entertainment to offer. Many luxurious boat rentals can be found here, but why not go for a whole new level of water fun… on a horse! That's right. The locals around Montego Bay have trained their horses for bareback riding in the warm Caribbean water, some of them joking, "These are the Jamaican jet ski." For many, swimming on a horse is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. When you’re ready to return to more traditional sailing, Montego Bay is a perfect launching point for longer, deep water journeys to other Caribbean hot spots like the Caymans. Montego Bay itself is a fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving destination due to its crystal clear waters. No matter what kind of the sailing adventure you prefer, Jamaica guarantees a great time. It’s time to pack your bags and experience the magical spirit of Jamaica!
